A few of the shops were pretty cute, filled with an abundance of nautically themed objects and apparel. If you didn't know, I'm a touch obsessed with anything nautical.
I tried on this mesh anchor top, that I really liked, but didn't fifty dollars like.
I also spotted the Milly Sailboat Skirt, which retails for (I believe) $238. I picked it up and said, "Oh, I love this skirt, I so want it!" and then promptly put it down again because I knew just what it was and the associated costs.
The store owner than asked me, "Well why don't you buy it then?"
Which really sort of threw me, never before has a store owner asked me that, but I told her frankly that it was too expensive for me. She told me it was 30% off. I managed an awkward laugh and mumbled something and got the heck out the shop.
What I wanted to say was, oh well, even with that discount I spent less on everything that I am wearing right now including shoes and accessories (excluding camera of course) than the price of that skirt.
Lets do the math.
The Rundown
Striped Top TJMaxx $20 - Orange Shorts H&M $7 - Sandals Ciao Bella $30 - Bag Hype $10 - Straw Fedora Gap $8 - Starfish Cuff St. Thomas via TJMaxx $40 - Starfish Ring c/o LuShae Jewelry - Orange Bracelet Kohls $10 - Coral Bracelet Coco's $1.60 - Bracelets and Ring The Cavernous Jewelry Box gift
The price of the skirt with the discount would be $166.60
My total outfit cost would be $126.60
Yeah. I should have told her that.
Ah - don't you just love summer?! You look darling.
ReplyDeletehahahaha good job for not giving in into seller's pressure. That anchor top was cute though! What a nice place you visited, I love your outfit, especially shorts with platforms, they look great.
ReplyDeleteWhile that skirt is freaking adorable, I would have passed for that price tag as well. I think your outfit looks JUST as great and for less cost! You have such a great nautical vibe to your outfits, makes me wish I lived near the water :)
ReplyDeletevery pretty combo! yes, i thought i like that anchor top too...but $50? hmm :D
ReplyDeletelove this post. it's so true though, why spend sooo much money on something?? obviously it's possible to look awesome and stay in style while on a budget. you do a fantastic job!

You look great as always. You look like you had fun too!. This is a great color combo and I didn't know you has starfish ring to go with the bracelet!

How funny would it be if you calculated the costs of different parts of your outfit right then and there at the store? Ha...actually, I think the store owner would be a tad bit impatient. But anyways, I'd be quite surprised even if you did buy it...since your blog is called Chic on the CHEAP. haha

Oh, I've heard some people mention Watch Hill, but never knew what it was. Thanks for enlightening me! It looks very charming - especially the chalk drawings on the brick wall.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a pretty hefty price for a skirt. But your outfit reflects the nautical look and I love it. The stripes look amazing on you. I tried the tying-the-shirt-in-the-front today in my outfit. I totally forgot to mention on my blog that I was inspired by you to do that. But I'm thinking about doing something similar tomorrow so stay tuned.

I love how you calculated that your entire outfit is the better deal. And you look pretty in anything nautical!

Rhode Island looks so pretty! I have never been. You look lovely. I love the color of your shorts.
ReplyDeleteNo, I could never guess you liked nautical things...
ReplyDeleteThat skirt is really nice, but I wouldn't have gotten it either. Although knowing Milly, it's probably silk... sigh.
Love love love this location for a look book shoot!
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog and wish I could have been a fly on the wall when you were in the shop with the $$$ skirt. I just finished reading a Lucky magazine today and the prices gave me sticker shock,I guess its just for inspiration. Although I rarely thrift, I am a bargain hunter and my mantra is: never ever buy full price. Thanks for inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThat anchor top is really cute, and you can probably find a cheaper version online somewhere.
ReplyDelete8 striped shirts? Hee hee that may be a bit much.
ReplyDeleteLove the colour of your shorts. Do you know you were featured in the Budget Babe's weekly link round up?
Love the colour of your shorts and love the cuff!

I love the color of your shorts + the nautical top/vibe of the entire outfit. You look great in that hat!

such a lovely outfit! i cannot walk past nautical themed clothing without picking it up, if it doesnt fit/ is obscenely expensive, i hide it so that noone else can find it. yes, am a horrible person.
ReplyDeletethat mesh top is so nice, 50 bucks is a bit much..

Haha, deal shopping is the best, the only way I roll! I love the quaint town you are in, the pictures are just amazing!
ReplyDeleteYou make me giggle with your awkward exit of the store. I would have done the same thing. I think that even if I had the money for clothes like that it would be hard to spend that much on one piece of clothing.
ReplyDeleteI love your little nautical look here though. The orange shorts and the striped top are adorable companions.
I think $238 is about the point I get a pillowcase and some fabric paint and spend some time making my own sailboat skirt!
ReplyDeleteLove the photo of the pink chair in the alley :)
Love, love, love the stripes and starfish cuff! Such a summery look.
ReplyDeleteYou look great, as usual! And way to stick to your guns!

Very expenisive skirt so very clever thinking. I'm sure something similar and cheaper will crop up sooner or later if you wish hard enough for it... :) Or if you make it yourself. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures honey, you look amazing! I love your style, great outfit :)
ReplyDeleteThose shorts are just ADORABLE - especially with your lovely tangle of bangles.

LOVING this outfit!

I LIKE IT FAST
well I do love Rhode Island but this town has some crazy pricey shops. 50 bucks for that top and 166 for a skirt (granted its Milly but still)...too rich for my blood.
ReplyDeleteI love the first photo.. you look like you are from a magazine!! and that is one funky starfish bracelet.. you always have the best stuff!!!
ReplyDeletegreat photos girl!! you are awesome!! xoxo J
Haha you *definitely* should have told her that! I don't know if I'd ever be able to justify spending a huge amount on clothes either, but the skirt is adorable! P.s - still lusting your starfish cuff...I must try and find one :D
ReplyDeleteThat's one cheeky shop owner! It kills me when they seem to forget what money is...and that style doesn't have to cost that much.
ReplyDeleteLydia x
That starfish cuff is SO cool! I seriously love it. Way to go for looking so chic yet keeping things affordable :)
ReplyDeleteWell, weird shop owner aside, it looks and reads like you had a good time - I always love your cute and chic ensembles!
ReplyDeleteThe anchor top was pretty cute but the price kind of high! The shop owner must have really needed that sale. Maybe you can make your own version!
ReplyDeleteLove your bag and those peach short. Guess what I ordered on Sunday...the Lucky Brand Silver Starfish cuff! I'm super excited to finally have one!! :)
Oh, so this is were you went :)
ReplyDeleteI see it was a great sunny day !
I love to walk into expensive shops and just get ideas.
