Watch Hill

Today I went to Watch Hill in Rhode Island. I hadn't been there since I was six, and it was pretty much just as I remembered: a town with tourist shops, a shabby carrousel, restaurants and a beach. Unless you are having a beach day, the town takes about an hour and a half to walk around and look in the shops, three if you stop to eat a couple times ;)

A few of the shops were pretty cute, filled with an abundance of nautically themed objects and apparel. If you didn't know, I'm a touch obsessed with anything nautical.

I tried on this mesh anchor top, that I really liked, but didn't fifty dollars like.

I also spotted the Milly Sailboat Skirt, which retails for (I believe) $238. I picked it up and said, "Oh, I love this skirt, I so want it!" and then promptly put it down again because I knew just what it was and the associated costs.

The store owner than asked me, "Well why don't you buy it then?"
Which really sort of threw me, never before has a store owner asked me that, but I told her frankly that it was too expensive for me. She told me it was 30% off. I managed an awkward laugh and mumbled something and got the heck out the shop.

What I wanted to say was, oh well, even with that discount I spent less on everything that I am wearing right now including shoes and accessories (excluding camera of course) than the price of that skirt.
Lets do the math.
Watch Hill
The Rundown
Striped Top TJMaxx $20 - Orange Shorts H&M $7 - Sandals Ciao Bella $30 - Bag Hype $10 - Straw Fedora Gap $8 - Starfish Cuff St. Thomas via TJMaxx $40 - Starfish Ring c/o LuShae Jewelry - Orange Bracelet Kohls $10 - Coral Bracelet Coco's $1.60 - Bracelets and Ring The Cavernous Jewelry Box gift

The price of the skirt with the discount would be $166.60
My total outfit cost would be $126.60
Yeah. I should have told her that.

  3. While that skirt is freaking adorable, I would have passed for that price tag as well. I think your outfit looks JUST as great and for less cost! You have such a great nautical vibe to your outfits, makes me wish I lived near the water :)

  7. How funny would it be if you calculated the costs of different parts of your outfit right then and there at the store? Ha...actually, I think the store owner would be a tad bit impatient. But anyways, I'd be quite surprised even if you did buy it...since your blog is called Chic on the CHEAP. haha

  8. Oh, I've heard some people mention Watch Hill, but never knew what it was. Thanks for enlightening me! It looks very charming - especially the chalk drawings on the brick wall.

  9. Wow, that's a pretty hefty price for a skirt. But your outfit reflects the nautical look and I love it. The stripes look amazing on you. I tried the tying-the-shirt-in-the-front today in my outfit. I totally forgot to mention on my blog that I was inspired by you to do that. But I'm thinking about doing something similar tomorrow so stay tuned.

  12. No, I could never guess you liked nautical things...

That skirt is really nice, but I wouldn't have gotten it either. Although knowing Milly, it's probably silk... sigh.

  14. I love reading your blog and wish I could have been a fly on the wall when you were in the shop with the $$$ skirt. I just finished reading a Lucky magazine today and the prices gave me sticker shock,I guess its just for inspiration. Although I rarely thrift, I am a bargain hunter and my mantra is: never ever buy full price. Thanks for inspiring.

  26. You make me giggle with your awkward exit of the store. I would have done the same thing. I think that even if I had the money for clothes like that it would be hard to spend that much on one piece of clothing.

I love your little nautical look here though. The orange shorts and the striped top are adorable companions.

  27. I think $238 is about the point I get a pillowcase and some fabric paint and spend some time making my own sailboat skirt!

Love the photo of the pink chair in the alley :)

  30. Very expenisive skirt so very clever thinking. I'm sure something similar and cheaper will crop up sooner or later if you wish hard enough for it... :) Or if you make it yourself. :)

  33. well I do love Rhode Island but this town has some crazy pricey shops. 50 bucks for that top and 166 for a skirt (granted its Milly but still)...too rich for my blood.

  35. Haha you *definitely* should have told her that! I don't know if I'd ever be able to justify spending a huge amount on clothes either, but the skirt is adorable! P.s - still lusting your starfish cuff...I must try and find one :D

  36. That's one cheeky shop owner! It kills me when they seem to forget what money is...and that style doesn't have to cost that much.
