Today I'm just sharing the daytime photos, tomorrow I'll talk more about the event and you can see how I transitioned my dress from day to evening.
At the entrance to the aquarium we were greeted by Lidia the seal, part of a traveling sculpture exhibit called "Washed Ashore". All the the sculptures are made from garbage found along the Pacific coast, plastic that is hurting and killing all manner of sea life, and they evoke a mixture of emotions; beauty, sadness, and hope. Combined, over 12 tons of debris went into creating the sculptures in the collection, a number that really brings to light just how serious the problem is. You can learn more about Washed Ashore and their mission at their website.
Neither Meg nor I had been to the aquarium in years, but it was still fun to watch the beluga whales perform little tricks, see the penguins get their lunch, and feel genuinely creeped out by all the sharks, sting rays, and moray eels, separated only by a few inches and some glass. Plus, the whole aquarium, grounds and in the tanks, was decked out for halloween. My personal favorite was the skeleton wearing a wet suit in the shark tank. The one part of the aquarium that was not so fun - the 4D movie, which the woman at the entrance insisted we go see. Just as I put on my 3D glasses and was wondering what the '4' meant, water was sprayed in my face!
Be sure and check out Meg's post (she has a bunch more animal photos) and come back tomorrow for the post about the event!

That is so cool to know your aquarium has beluga whales. (i love those!)
ReplyDeleteI agree that the seal statue evokes mixed feelings too. I feel more and more aware of my carbon footprint and wonder if I am doing everything I can to reduce my own amount of waste.
Love your look (and that Rocksbox necklace) on you. Can't wait to see how you transitioned this dresss to night.

What a fun place for an event! I can't wait to read your post about it! I really like your casual look of dressing down your dress. The tote is fab!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you took a picture of the penguins. We have a big aquarium here, but there are no penguins - such a disappointment, it almost seems not worth a bother to visit if you can't watch penguin feeding time. Or maybe that's just me ;) Either way, I love this casual look on you - that dress is so perfect that I really want to steal it from you and it looks amazing with Chuck Taylors!

What an interesting way to bring awareness to the pollution issues in our oceans! I bet it's interesting to go to an aquarium as an adult and understand the greater issues surrounding conservation and things like that!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I obviously love this outfit as it includes several of my favorite fall staples. Can't wait to see how you switched it up!
You look so cute - and i see this look transitioned into the other one I just commented on -
