This is the first year the rights to the play have been made available to the high school and college level, so a very select few were even able to preform it. The town has been buzzing about it since the summer and I made sure to get my tickets early, because every show it completely sold out.
From the moment the overture began to play, it was so loud and intense and overwhelming (in the best possible way) and the huge elaborate set was revealed, it was easy to forget this was a high school production; the talent and incredible voices of those teenagers, to sing an opera - my jaw literally dropped.
To the handful of you who were in the play who might actually read this, I have to say it again, you were wonderful!
As for the fashion; this skirt is one of my creations that is actually a failure. I was so irritated with it that I'd tossed it into the DNR pile, because I didn't think it was worth bothering to try and fix.
The elastic in the waist band didn't get tight enough to wear without the aid of a belt, the material is too sheer to wear without a slip, and before I even started working with the fabric there were two big pulls in it that I didn't notice until I was done.
But I really wanted to wear a white skirt today, and it is too soon to wear cotton eyelet lace (my only other white skirt option), so I tried to make this work.
My other issue with today's outfit is these tights. Last year when I was so desperate to have dot tights and finally found a pair, I decided to be oh-so-clever and get two pairs, so when one got a pull, I'd have a backup. Well, these are the brand new backup pair I put on this morning, and when I took off my shoes tonight I had two big runs in both toes.
Aside from those teensy issues, I really love this outfit. The fabric of the skirt has gold thread woven through it and black and gold is always a rich and wonderful pairing.

Too bad you don't like the skirt; I actually think it looks really pretty, especially with the items you paired with it. :D
ReplyDeleteI think you look great as usual!!
ReplyDeleteOur son is in a play in April and I can't wait to see all that young talent all together after all the practice. It's not something he wants to do seriously, he's just musical. This is where it all begins for some of these budding stars!
tights- you need to love em and leave em. a few weeks ago i came to a party and ripped mine in the 1st 5 min. my friend loaned me a new pair, which i subsequently ripped before we went out. tights- fail. but they keep us warm :) at least you looked cute!
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit - your necklace is a dream, the belt is tied just right and the tights are an added touch.
ReplyDeleteThe play sounds like it was a great - I would have loved to hear those young voices carry it away.

Love those shoes. And don't get me started on tights, sometimes I feel as if they are far above my technological horizon and I'm an engineer. Nevertheless, those tights look fabulous on you.
ReplyDeleteooh I like!!! Poo on the toes of the tights being messed up already though :(
ReplyDeleteMy old high school is doing Fiddler on the Roof this year...haha...I never go to the plays though (shame on me)

That sucks about all the outfit fails, but, for what it's worth, it all looks really good and you can't see the various fails at all - and I'm glad you had fun at the show!

Oh man that is ne thing I want to do, go to a play, I haven't been one in years except for the ones in school for little kids. I do agree with you on the skirt, also I don't know what to think about high waist but it's good that you are giving it a chance. I love your shoes and your tights, once I found a good pair at Kohls and now they have a hole, I don't know where to get some for cheap, I should have bought more, they were only $4 bucks. Hope you have a great weekend Lyddie. =)
ReplyDeleteI seem to have that issue with every fun pair of tights I buy. I wear them once, and they get a hole or run. It's so annoying! This is a great outfit though, perfect for the theater (even if the theater is a high school auditorium).
ReplyDeleteI think your skirt looks great on you and I love the dotted tights and shoes with it!
ReplyDeleteI might have to dig the sewing machine out from under all of the craft clutter to make myself a similar skirt. It looks great.
ReplyDeleteI'd say the outfit was a success for these pics!!
ReplyDeletei have been having the same problem with tights, runs galore.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful outfit today!! I love the belt with the skirt!! oxxo J
ReplyDeletethe skirt looks good from my point of view...i sew and i know how hard smocking is...so you did a good job i think
ReplyDeleteI think the skirt looks great in this outfit! The tights look so chic too! I'm sorry to hear you got to runs in them though... bummer :(

You look so classically beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteI never knew Phantom wasn't available to high school and college, always thought it had something to do budget and complicated sets. I was actually disappointed with it on Broadway and I think it would be way better in a more intimate venue! I actually like your skirt a lot but totally understand the frustration with something that doesn't quite fit exactly right. And I'm so frustrated with rips in sheers that I basically don't wear them any more, I can usually manage to wreck a pair in under three hours. I like black and gold too, used to wear a lot of it in college - sorority colors!
ReplyDeleteIm such a fan, I've only seen the theater production once in my teens.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures! Love the leopard cardigan and spotted tights! x o style, she wrote
