That sounded pretty good to me, but I didn't feel that my striped maxi was office appropriate. I began to search for my perfect maxi skirt.
I wanted it to be black, in a non-clingy, opaque fabric, that was full enough on the bottom to balance out my wide hips (no ice cream cone syndrome please!), and long enough that I could wear it with my usual three inch heels.
I went to three stores and tried on no fewer than 15 skirts before I finally decided on this one by Max Studio. The MSRP is $78, the TJ Maxx price is $25. I had to settle for navy, since I couldn't find the black one in a medium and I was convinced that the small would be too tight. After wearing the medium for a day, I think the small probably would have been okay.
The other surprising challenge was finding a skirt that was long enough. Being 5'2" I'm typically swimming in everything, but most of the skirts would have been short enough for me to wear flats in.
Which brings up the question that's been bothering me - where should the hem of a maxi dress hit? Should you see your feet or should it skim the floor?
The Rundown
I think the length you got is perfect on you. I've been looking for a good maxi myself and have been having serious issues. I'm 5'8" and finding a maxi long enough that's affordable has been nearly impossible. I'm going to have to check out my local TJ Maxx to see if there's one like yours. I love the shape.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great skirt! It makes you look 10 feet tall - in a good way. :)

I think the length of this one is pretty much perfect...

Don't you just LOVE the sales that TJ and Marshall's have?! It's ridiculously wonderful! Also I really love the top and the belt you wore!
ReplyDeletei just love this skirt.so lovely and flowing!great top too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous skirt! Great find.

You put this outfit together nicely. Fortunately for me I don't really have a problem with maxi anything since I'm 5'7. I can see why you'd ask what the perfect length would be because you'd want it to be versatile..w/flats and w/heels...

The length is perfection on you, Lyddie! I've basically just given up on finding shorter maxis and just hem them myself!

I've recently discovered that I can wear maxi skirts - I'm 5'2" as well...but the only way they work is if the hem hits the floor - so I HOPE that's the way they are supposed to be worn :) Love the way you styled this one!

I adore how you styled this skirt. I love maxi skirts/dresses, but I agree -- I have NO idea what to wear for shoes b/c nothing seems quite right. My flats make the skirt appear frumpy and boots make me feel like I'm about to do some witchcraft. LOL! The only thing that seems to look "sort of" right for me is ankle booties. But I love the sandals, too, for summer!

I like my maxis to reach the floor, but I always have the same problem as you do and I'm only 5'4"!!! Why??? Perhaps they are supposed to show our feet and we don't realize it? At any rate, I am glad that you found this one. It looks great and wouldn'tcha know it, I'm wearing a maxi dress today too!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous outfit. You strike a great balance betwen spring and what appeared to be a dark and gloomy day.
ReplyDeleteAs for maxi skirts, I like them to hit exactly where yours does in this picture; covering my feet, but not touching the ground.
I have the same problem with maxi dresses and skirts ... this girls has some hips and it can be really unflattering for me ... I love that one that you bought and I think it sits perfectly!!

Love that top! I feel ya, I got a pleated maxi skirt that had to go back because the length just did not work on me!

WOW this was a great choice - and i think you styled it perfect.
ReplyDeleteNow, in regards to the length, for me it should ALMOST hit the floor, not sweeping it but letting your shoes peek a little.. just like you are wearing it.
oooh, that's tough to say. I think it all depends on how tall you are. Regardless of whether or not it's a fashion faux pas, I always cringe when I see women wearing maxis where the hemline falls at the ankle (especially if they're wearing heels). All in all, I think you did a great job strategizing and being picky about what you wanted in a maxi...and it paid off because it looks good on you!
ReplyDeleteThe skirt looks great on you and the legnth is perfect. I always like mine to hit the tops of my shoes, but not too much longer or I have a tendency to trip!
ReplyDeleteI just got home from trying on Maxi dresses at Tj Maxx. No luck for me, in part due the the length issue, but I love, love, love this skirt on you!
ReplyDeleteI love the color of your skirt and the cute top you paired with it. :)
ReplyDeletelove your maxi skirt! I just bought my first one recently too (J.Crew). That belt is so unique and amazing, to be honest, my heart sank a little when I saw that it was thrifted..
ReplyDeletexx
you found a great skirt. I think is supposed to skim the floor but really it should hit whenever you want it to.
ReplyDeleteGreat find!! Loving your top and the structure of your skirt!

I think the skirt seems the right length. The jacket is awesome too.

ReplyDeleteOooh!!! Good choice! I love it :)
ReplyDeleteAs for length, I dunno, I have the same question, haha

Looks like you scored! I found a similar skirt at Target!
ReplyDeleteI think you should be able to see your feet. If it's skimming the floor, you have to worry that you will trip on it. Maybe that's just me ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute...and I don't wear enough long skirts to know where the hem should be haha, but whatever yours is now looks great!
ReplyDeleteI'm still looking for a good maxi skirt - my trouble is that they're always too short for me. I love your skirt, and it looks awesome with that sailboat top!
ReplyDeleteThis is GOOD. I like the length right where you have it, and personally go between skimming the floor and a touch higher.
ReplyDeleteMaxi skirt dreams right here!
This outfit is amazing - the skirt and the top together is very elegant. The first picture has a magazine-like quality.

I love how you styled this maxi! Floor skimming maxis look nice but aren't actually practical for walking around. You'll spend the whole day holding up your skirt to walk. I speak from personal experience on this...
ReplyDeleteI like maxis to basically cover my feet, but that doesn't actually happen for me a lot. Usually they're either kind of short or reaaaaally long.
ReplyDeleteI want to belt a shirt over a maxi now... wonder if that would work on me. Oh, and today I wore actual pajamas to work... well, Anthropologie lounge. That's basically pajamas, right?
love the colors and designs!
ReplyDeleteLooks so comfortable! I don't own any long skirt because it's hard to find the perfect length. Love the pairing of the sailboat blouse and denim jacket.

love this look. I think that if you should a tiny bit of your shoes, like you did here, it looks good. I am also a fan of the other extreme, which is basically having your maxi sweep the floor...but when I do that myself (personally) it annoys me, b/c I don't like to see the skirt get dirty haha.
ReplyDeletePS: Gave you a little shout out today on my post.

I feel like maxi dresses/skirts should come about an inch off the ground so when you walk you can see your shoes~ like a princess~ whee~
ReplyDeletebut at the same time I feel like it depends whether or not you're wearing heels... at least with some dresses, you can adjust the straps to maybe make it fall a bit more. IDK maybe some maxi dresses are better suited to be longer than others!~
This is nice, though. I love how the pink ships pop so much! You pretty much made navy seem like black here, so props for that.
lovely outfit!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing look! Your pairing with the pink sailboat top was suite! Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteI would like to feature you on my work wear wednesday this upcoming week, so stay tuned.

I like maxi dresses that barely graze the ground so that your feet show while walking but not necessarily standing.
ReplyDeleteLove this look. Great idea pairing that top with the skirt

So gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteThe way your skirt flows is so beautiful! Such a great piece to have, and I think it's a great length. As great as your maxi skirt is, I have to say I'm absolutely in love with that sailboat blouse! I am seriously jealous, because it is so awesome!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this outfit!!
