I love shopping for clothing secondhand. Be it thrift, consignment, or even tag sale, it is a great way to help keep within my shopping budget and allows me to add higher end pieces to my wardrobe at prices I can stomach.
Of course these stores are highly localized, require me to scour through the racks, and if I hope to find the good stuff, I have to visit frequently so I can get it as soon as it comes in. It can be fun, but it can also be frustrating and exhausting.
You can imagine how excited I was when I heard about ThredUP, an online consignment store, with a huge, searchable inventory.
Looking for a black cocktail dress in a size six? With a couple of clicks you've got nearly two hundred to choose from.
ThredUP isn't just for shopping either, they are a consignment shop, which means you can send them your clothes for cash. Personally I've never liked brining my clothes to consignment stores, because I hated feeling judged by the person looking over my clothes. With ThredUP, you can check the value of your clothes at home, decide what is worth sending, then mail them in. No worrying about judgement, just money in your PayPal account.
This week I am participating in the ThredUP style challenge, where I was given $150 to create a week's worth of outfits. Because I found such amazing deals, like this new with tags silk dress for only $30, I was actually able to purchase eight items. So you will be seeing all of my purchases over the next few days.

Very pretty dress! What a great idea. I always say I'm going to bring some of my things to a consignment shop and never follow through. This is a great option.
ReplyDeleteWow love that dress! Such a great price too! I can't wait to see the rest of your looks! :D

I have a lot of trouble with secondhand shopping for exactly the reasons you've described - so much searching, the constant need to return to stores and, if you're me and have very specific ideas of what you want, the basic impossiblity of finding anything. I think you do a wonderful job of it - I really admire people with the patience. And you're right, online consignment stores are so much easier! I love this dress, especially because it was such a bargain :)

ReplyDeleteLOVE that dress on you Lydia!
ReplyDeleteNow THAT sounds like an amazing deal! I am going to have to check them out ASAP (well . . . after I'm done with my ban-ish whatever). I love this dress on you Lydia! What pretty colors!
ReplyDeleteLyddie, even on the photos I can see this dress is made of silk and it is simply amazing! I love it...
ReplyDeleteToo bad we barely have any consignment stores here but having something like ThreadUp here in Germany would be a dream - both for buying and selling (ebay can be such a pain).

I have a feeling ThredUP is going to be super popular. What a nice service! The biggest complaint I hear from people wanting to buy second hand is sifting through the racks and piles. This makes it so much easier. I love the dress you purchased Lydia and I can't wait to see your other finds. Good job!

Lovely dress! I like how you can check the estimated price of your items before turning them in. I would definitely consider selling my clothes to ThredUp instead of a consignment store!
