Palms in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara was another short one night stay. We had our horseback beach ride scheduled for that evening and it was my first time riding a horse, pony rides aside. My horse was named Bacio, and while she didn't really care to run through the water, I did have fun attempting to learn how to trot and canter as the sun set and the waves rolled in.

The next day we spent strolling down State Street, a two mile stretch of nothing but shops and restaurants, and of course they were all the stores you can find anywhere; Banana Republic, Free People, Gap, Express, you know. This did not stop us from going in, nor did it stop me from picking up a peplum top at Banana Republic that I'd been eyeing since April, finally reduced to $12.

This is one of my favorite outfits of the trip, partly because I had been dreaming of having photos in this palm print top with palm trees in the background, and partly because it's the debut of the waist bag, or belt bag, or fanny pack, if you prefer.

Despite both Sean and my sister telling me that the waist bag should not be a thing, and despite the fact that even at 40% off this bag still cost $116, I was set on having it. It was a combination of my still remaining love of Fiona from Burn Notice, with having credits to spend at Shopbop and Amazon Prime, so even though I waited until the last possible moment it would still arrive before my departure.

While the waist bag is so deeply embedded in all things unfashionable, and I got a kick out of this blog post I read, likening designers trying to make waist bags popular akin to "trying to make fetch happen", I am completely happy with my purchase.

  2. Haha, at least its stylish and not nylon like the one I just bought. But I got it for camping, it has a phone slot and a place for a water bottle.
Woohoo for your palm trees in front of palm trees!

  5. Haha, its funny how they wanted to steer you away from the waist bag.
I think yours is cute and practical but in general they remind me of tourists.
Great palm tree on palm tree look.

  9. Cute top! And I have to say, that bag looks pretty cool, not "fanny-packish" at all! I like it.

  10. Ha! I love the Fiona reference. (I miss that show.) I'm kind of loving the waist bag on you. It helps that it's a luxe leather and not a weird nylon material. ;-)

  11. Hahaha I am SO anti fanny packs for a multitude of reasons BUT I can't help respecting a woman who just goes for it :) being leather helps. Quite a bit GRIN do come by and join my Project Sister Act Link-Up, Lydia, I'd love for you to be a part of it.

  17. Your palm print is perfect for the setting, and I think you are rocking the waist bag. We are actually headed for a one night stay in Santa Barbara soon too, so I am taking notes. The horse ride sounds so fun!

  18. Palm print and palm trees - what could be more perfect? I admit I had a bit of a giggle about the waist bag. While I can see their practicality and while, admittedly, yours is about the cutest one I've ever seen, I have to admit that it's one trend I'll simply never be able to understand or participate in - at least partly because I like my bags pristine and I know I would bump a waist bag into absolutely everything!
