While this skirt was not the dress of my dreams (if I could even recall what that dress might be), for $10 I wasn't going to let it go. As it was fill a bag, I also added a J.Crew white peplum top, a coral cardigan, which had no tags, but was likely from Old Navy or something similar, and a J.Crew white cotton square scarf.
Over the last year, I never wore the sweater and donated it. I haven't worn the peplum top, and this is the very first time the Milly skirt is being worn. The square scarf I use as a lining for my bamboo bag and is apparently the only item I should have left with that day.
I love secondhand shopping, I really do. I've gotten some amazing pieces I never would have otherwise, however I often fall into the trap of buying something just because it's too good a deal to pass up on, and then all that happens is they sit in my closet and take up space.

I love the idea of secondhand shopping, but either I go to the wrong stores or I just don't have the patience for it. I recently went to one of the biggest secondhand stores here in Winnipeg. Granted, it isn't known for housing amazing designer pieces, it's a very regular kind of secondhand store. But still. I walked in, perused, found absolutely nothing, and walked out again. I was waiting to consign some pieces, so I waited out in the sun, and while I did, I watched about ten people come out with armfuls of clothes. I want to think maybe they are just more like you and picked pieces because they were a good deal (although I can guarantee none of them were even close to as lovely as this Milly skirt) but I also suspect I am missing out onf pieces I will never otherwise own because I just can't seem to find the right secondhand spots or develop the skills to find good pieces when I go to them.

Wow! For $10, that skirt is such an insane find! It's super flattering, too!

I used to have that same issue, but thanks to me doing that wardrobe challenge I've gotten better. But I do still buy the occasional piece because it's a super deal (even if its still a couple hundred dollars) and it hardly gets worn...whoops!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great skirt though, and at least you wore it once. The scarf made up for your cost/wear, haha

I definitely have a tendency to do that when I second hand or even just sale shop - there are plenty of things in my closet that got there in a very similar manner that I have yet to wear.

Love that skirt!
ReplyDeleteI really like that skirt, what a nice style, it's perfect with the stripes! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm guilty of just buying thing without thinking when second hand shopping too sometimes. Our local opshop (thrift shop) had a fill a bag for $2 sale and of the 5 clothing items I picked up for me, only 2 I kept, the rest are damaged or will be donated back. I'm trying to be really ruthless and treat the things I thrift with the same scrutiny as I do the things I buy, and think of multiple ways to wear them and wear them twice in the same month I buy them. It's definitely a work in progress though!
Hope that you are having a great week so far! I've had the week off which has been a nice change! :)

I really think this happens to all of us. I find it especially when I buy many items even at the retail shops. Because obviously I can't wear them all right away. But I find that wearing them right away is so helpful. Maybe it hits my brain that they are now mine?? Maybe I get the idea of how I like them and how they fit?? But if I don't wear them right away, they tend to sit (and marinade as I like to joke). Strange, right??

That can be the problem when thrifting. There are so many amazing deals that you can find out there. I have really learned to keep to my list when I shop. I just adore that skirt and how cute it is! So glad you're getting some use out of it!

What can I say, I am guilty of this happening to me too - in fact I currently have a Max Mara ruffle wrap skirt on my vintage mannequin. Its been there for over 4 months unworn, a consignment purchase I could not pass up-
ReplyDeleteThis outfit is so chic! That skirt was a great find and I love how you've paired it with that top!

I am a huge fan of wrap skirts and that khaki one is great, especially paired with the striped top. Makes a great monochromatic look. I plan on doing some shopping for Vivian tomorrow and one of the stores for her is next to consignment shop so I will check it out for sure. You always find gems!
