As I stared at this dress in my closet I started to regret buying it. The return window had since closed along with my fantasies about it. Do you see a piece and imagine where you'd like to wear it and how you'd style it? I always do. I call it my pretend life; where this dress went to Martha's Vineyard and was worn with a straw hat and there was an outdoor patio overlooking the water and a cocktail in my hand.
The reality was that I went to support a local blogger's pop-up shop, sipped champagne out of a plastic cup, and then when I got home, dragged my mom to the yacht club to snap photos before the sun went down.
Looking at these photos, I don't regret buying the dress, just that always let my fantasies slip away.

It's a beautiful dress, so perfect for summer but I can see it working for cooler weather too with a cardi or a long sleeve top underneath! :) It sounds like you had a fun day out in it even if it wasn't what you had planned when you bought the dress!
ReplyDeleteHope that you had a lovely weekend!
I just posted my weekday wear linkup, I'd love you to join! :)

This dress looks amazing on you! And I know what you mean, when I stopped daydreaming about where I *might* someday wear something, and started being honest with myself about how often I would actually wear something, how much use I'd really get out of pieces, and how versatile things really weren't for me, I stopped buying new clothing almost completely. I already have enough, more than most people will have in their entire lifetimes, and I am grateful for what I have. I don't need a new white dress every month, when it is cold here half the year, you know? It's difficult to be honest with yourself and realize we are all so driven by consumerism that it's hard to know which desires (for clothing, accessories, beauty products, etc.) are really ours, and which ones are just a product of clever advertising and selling a fantasy. Thank you so much for your honesty! <3
ReplyDeleteI love this dress on you. The cut and fit is perfection. And you would get more wear out of it because it classic.

I have a lot of pieces in my closet that I wove little stories about in my head in terms of where I'd wear them and how I'd feel in them and, unfortunately, virtually none of them have ever come to pass either, so I definitely get it. But, I suppose, even if the occasion to wear this dress doesn't look exactly like you imagined, it still seems like a fun day and, either way, you look amazing in it.

I love that you have a story for your pieces even before you wear them Lydia. You must be a story teller at heart!!

This dress seems so versatile that I can't imagine why it would be a regret! It will look equally great with a cardigan and scarf, or perhaps with a moto style jacket? I really can see it styled in so many ways!
ReplyDeleteI love that dress and your bag!

I love that dress, and even if you can't wear it many more times this year, it's classic enough that no doubt you'll get more wear out of it in the future. And also, your reality sounds pretty fun to me! Definitely more exciting than mine of just coming home, cooking dinner, and putting kids to bed (and then me to bed shortly after)! :)
ReplyDeleteMight not be Martha's Vineyard, but still a gorgeous dress in a gorgeous setting!

The dress looks gorgeous on you. What size are you wearing? Some of the reviewers mentioned that it is tight. Do you think it will fit a curvy woman well?
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovely dress Lydia ! These pictures could have been taken at the Italian Riviera...
ReplyDeleteI think that it's true, sometimes what actually happens in our heads is something different than what we have, however it does not mean its not good or that it cannot be changed.
I am absolutely guilty of buying clothes for my fantasy life. I continue to make small strides towards not doing that, but somehow the bad habit finds ways to crop up when I least expect it - this year, for example, instead of buying clothes for my fantasy life, I bought piles of clothes for our trip to Greece, letting them sit unworn for months when they were weather appropriate because I was "saving" them for a nine-day trip when I would have time to wear most of them only once or twice. Suffice it to say, you are not alone - but since I have never been to Martha's Vineyard and can't really imagine how this dress might have looked there, I think this backdrop is perfectly beautiful for showing it off.
