There are at least half a dozen pieces in my closet which need to shortened in some way, and as much as I would like to be able to wear them, I tend to procrastinate. A lot. It seems likely that some of the more summery dresses might not be dealt with until next summer, (hours before I want to leave the house in it) and maybe the jeans will just don a raw hem instead of a rolled one. Also if hemming your jeans simply by taking a pair of scissors and cutting them seems like a challenge, I've seen dozens how how-to posts addressing the subject. I find it remarkable how many steps (with photos) can be extrapolated from what I would consider common knowledge of using a ruler and a pair of scissors. But what do I know? I'm sure those who created such tutorials did so having studied trending google searches and are reaping the benefits of their SEO prowess.
I come to you only with the mention that when I finally mustered up the energy to chop three and a half inches off of this dress, rather than toss the selvage as I've done countless times before, I decided to make a hair scarf scrunchie instead. (So no, I'm not capitalizing on the trendiness of scrunchies and including a tutorial on how to sew a tube of fabric, SEO be damned.) Past the age of thirteen I was fairly certain I would never wear a scrunchie again, let alone one to match my dress, but I wont deny that I'm enjoying it. For once I turned the annoyance of being short and needing to hem everything into a bonus; a tall person could never have done this.

As a fellow short girl myself (I'm 5'2) I can totally relate! I have about four or five dresses that not only need hemming but also need to be taken in. My sewing skills are almost non-existent so I'm waiting to take them to my tailor which I actually don't know if her business is still open! Fingers crossed that it is. Anyway, I think this dress is gorgeous and you did a great job. I love the color and print.
ReplyDeleteNow there's a way to look at the silver lining!! I LOVE it.

Ooh super cute! I love the matchy-matchy with the scrunchie! And I love how the leather on the bag matches the color of the dress

That's a beautiful maxi dress on you and I love how you used the offcut - great idea! :) I think I'd be better at hemming things if I was able to do it myself - I tend to wait until I have a pile of things to go to the tailor with, haha! I do find that the trend for midi dresses has made life easier for me though, as they are maxi length on me without any effort. Cropped jeans are my fave too, perfect length with no hemming required!
ReplyDeleteHope your week is off to a good start :)

I love that you made a scrunchie - it's such a good idea and such a great accessory for this dress!

I love that you salvage the excess fabric into a scrunchie. It's a great idea and love how it looks! Btw, I love your bucket bag. I've been looking for something just like it!

I wonder about some tutorials and blog posts as well. Aren't some things common knowledge? But then I guess there are people out there that want specific instructions so good for those that wrote up those posts. Love that you thought of a use for that extra fabric. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteLove that you made a matching scrunchie! This outfit is so cute!

I love the shortened version of this dress- I wouldn't even know it didn't come this way! Perfect on you- and the scrunchie is such a cute addition!

I have to admit - I truly missed scrunchies when they went away. As a competitive gymnast in the mid- to late nineties, scrunchies were a way of life for me. I had one to match every single one of my competition bodysuits. I had a bunch that matched my every day clothes. I even had a special one I wore to bed. (Yep. I was that girl.) I have not gotten quite as into them as I expected since their return, but I suspect it's because my hair isn't really long enough for them just yet. One day soon, I hope to be able to wear an outfit like this one. If that comes about from me actually altering something in my wardrobe that's too long, so much the better. But since almost all of my wardrobe needs altering, well... we'll see :P
